Those are all great software. Though the latest one that has come out and beaten all of those (for KDE) is RecordItNow.

RecordItNow is extremely versatile and it even works with partically any audio system. It's not plenty of features (more than the rest) and a simple (yet nice) interface.

I made a quick video (~8min) on how to install it and use it on my blog http://bit.ly/cSBU5R

So far I've tried most, if not all, of the linux screencasting tools and RecordItNow trumps over them all (so far).

recordMyDesktop has issues with recording long screencasts. Eventually the video and audio get out of sync.

Xvidcap worked for me for quite some time, but recently, it messed up my audio (recording lots of crackle) I found it to be essentially unsupported. Now I switched to good old ffmpeg.

/opt/bin/ffmpeg -f x11grab -s 1024x768 -r 25 -i :0.0 -qscale 5 -f alsa -i pulse -ar 44100 out.mpeg

Compile a recent version--the older versions that come with most distros don't record the mouse pointer.

ffmpeg, like Xvidcap, produces MPEG files (duh), which is nice because you need no special software to splice them together--just use cat (seriously). And producing Flash is also easy:

ffmpeg -i out.mpeg -f flv out.flv

I use vnc2flv for recording the classes I teach. A 75 minute lecture of an 800x600 desktop will be a nice and small 35MB .flv file.

Also, on your article, windows users don't need anything outside of Firefox 3.6 to handle ogg video. That is built into the browser.
