My custom cd is giving Authentication Failed error. It says, there is no user UBUNTU.

It stops on GDM and doesn’t let me use any other terminal either.

Please help.

Also my updated usplash does not show upon booting the live cd but does come up when shutting down…Strange

Good for you for starting to get into customising your livecd.
A big word of warning on using such an old distro (I know it’s Long Term Support!) is that you may run into issues recovering newer types of filesystem such as ext4 which have become common defaults for recent systems.

A couple of comments. First of all this guide doesn’t make sense at all in some places and it seems you didn’t really know what you were doing. Like where you say to mount the live-cd into edit/dev. That is not what is happening. To successfully work with a chroot environment you need to make /dev and /proc available in the directory you are chrooting to. That’s all.

Otherwise: you are copying an outdated wiki article. Why not work with a recent Ubuntu? We’re at 9.10 now. Why not use the available GUI tools to remaster?

like:

- I intend to make a live-cd for a non-technical friend of mine, who is a musician. Unfortunately, Audacious and Audacity are not in the 8.04 repo’s.

- The command ‘mkisofs’ (make iso file system) is no longer used. Instead, ‘genisoimage’ (generate iso image) is used. However, this command has completely different parameters. Hence, I was unable to successfully terminate the howto.
